From mom to teacher, policy adviser to chancellor, cancer survivor to current candidate for state superintendent of schools, Catherine Truitt has been there and done that. Sitting down to talk with Truitt, one might not guess from the smile on her face and blonde bob haircut that she has beaten breast cancer. Truitt said she self-detected a lump just two months before the 2016 election, while serving as senior education advisor to then-Gov. State superintendent candidate: N.C. school system ‘out of sync’ with modern economy

By KEVIN GRIFFIN kgriffin@hickoryrecord.com – Jan 17, 2020 Updated Jan 17, 2020 Catherine Truitt is one of two Republican candidates running to succeed Superintendent of Public Instruction Mark Jackson, a Republican who is running for lieutenant governor. Truitt, a 49-year-old Cary resident, currently heads the nonprofit Western Governors University of North Carolina, which she describes as an online university intended to expand access to higher education. She was previously a teacher, senior educational adviser to Gov. Pat McCrory and administrator within the University of North Carolina system. Her Republican opponent in the race for superintendent is Craig Horn. Five Democrats have also filed to run for the position. The primaries will be held on March 3. Truitt was in Catawba County Thursday for a campaign appearance. Prior to her appearance, she sat down to discuss her qualifications for the job and views on educational policy. Republican Catherine Truitt, Chancellor of non-profit Western Governors University North Carolina (WGU NC), officially filed as a candidate for North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Truitt believes her unique background has led to this moment.  “I’ve had a very unusual career for someone who began as a classroom teacher,” Truitt said.  “I trained to be a high school English teacher but found myself teaching in all kinds of settings, including elementary school and young adults in the British school system.  My husband’s career as a naval officer meant we moved every few years, so I just bloomed where I was planted.”  After her husband’s 14 years of active duty service in the U.S. Navy, Truitt and her family moved to North Carolina.
